Redwoods Staring by Navkirat Sodhi

Grass beneath turns to liquid
The notorious Sequoia giants
A limp nervous mirage
The tall silence of afternoon jungle
Grates my knees and the girdle above
One by one
My grandparents flash
None in their body now
My turtle green fabric bag
I carried to nursery school
In wool my mother had embroidered
My name on it
Each letter a different colour
My father’s new wrong walking shoes
We were meant to return upon my return
The mahogany back of the double bed
In her first home
Where we were four to a room
A broken harmonium
Weekend plans
Stages, lights, microphones
A flood
A dive
A flight
My body on ground
I travel upward
A bear has looked me
In the eye
