Poetry at Sangam

Untitled by José Luís Peixoto

Translated by Hugo dos Santos

time, suddenly free through the streets and days,
like the wave of a storm dragging the world,
shows me how much i loved you before i met you.
it was your eyes, labyrinths of water, earth, fire, air,
that i loved while imagining i loved. it was your
your voice saying the words of life. it was your face.
it was your skin. before i met you, you existed in the trees
and in the hills and in the clouds that i saw at the end of the afternoon.
far from me, inside of me, you were the clarity.
