DESIRES by Abdourahman A. Waberi

(Translated from the French by Nancy Naomi Carlson.)

I am the whirring of the world
unappeased sway between here and elsewhere
mute foliage of cactus
coarse wood that conceals the gecko
rays of the yellow chameleon sky
bed for the world-book
whose pages are so many waves of the quest
for ever begun again
